Spintronics, also known as spin electronics or magnetic electronics, is a field of electronics that studies the interaction between the spin of electrons and their magnetic properties. Unlike traditional electronics, which mainly rely on the charge of electrons, spin electronics utilizes the spin degree of freedom to store, process, and transmit information. This creates new possibilities for electronics that are faster, more energy-efficient, and more reliable.

The basic principle of spin electronics is to control and manipulate the spin of electrons in magnetic materials. Electrons have both charge and spin, and the spin of an electron can be considered as a magnetic moment that can be either up or down. By controlling the magnetic state of electrons, spin electronics can change the magnetic field of a material and store information in a non-volatile manner.

Spintronics has been the subject of research since the 1980s, but it was not until the late 1990s that it began to attract widespread attention. One of the key breakthroughs in spin electronics was the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR), which led to the development of high-density magnetic storage devices such as hard disk drives.

Growing IoT device adoption is the main factor propelling the growth of the Spintronics Market.

GMR is a phenomenon where the electrical resistance of a magnetic material changes in response to an applied magnetic field. By controlling the magnetic field of the material, it is possible to change the resistance and, therefore, the flow of electric current.

Another important development in Spintronics is the study of spin transport, which involves the control and manipulation of the spin of electrons as they move through magnetic materials. This has led to the development of new types of electronic devices, such as spin valves and spin transistors.

The Passive Electronic Components Market was valued at USD 32.76 million in 2021, and from 2022 to 2030, it is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.0%.

A spin valve is a device that consists of two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic layer. By controlling the magnetic field of the layers, it is possible to change the resistance of the device and, therefore, control the flow of electric current. A spin transistor is a similar device that uses the spin of electrons to control the flow of current.
