The term Smartphone is an umbrella term for a whole industry. Mobile phones development is driven by a fundamental concern for connectivity and personalization, as McLuhan discusses in Understanding Media. The mobile phone's ability to connect with other devices and people across spatial barriers makes them a powerful tool for everyday use. A mobilephone can do much more than just talk to a person or receive calls, it can also read e-books, create calendars, play games, and more.

Unlike a desktop PC, a Smartphone has its own operating system. These systems control the device's resources and provide a number of features. These operating systems are the primary selling points for consumers. Popular mobile phone operating systems include Symbian OS from Nokia, Android from Google, BlackBerry OS from Research In Motion, and Windows Phone from Microsoft. Some mobile phone manufacturers release software updates regularly for their operating systems, which can be automatically downloaded by the user.

The word smart has many meanings. The word can mean "an object that appears to have a certain amount of intelligence". Another definition is a machine that can react to varying situations and past events. A smart material or medicine is designed to act in a sophisticated way. However, the word Smartphone has developed a specific meaning that has been evolving for some time. The current definition of a mobile phone has changed, and the word smart has been reinterpreted as "a device that is intelligent" in a wide variety of contexts.

While smartphones are a powerful tool for communications, the use of these devices isn't limited to phones. In fact, mobile phones are capable of doing everything from helping to plan a vacation to detecting and preventing crime. The popularity of these devices is even decreasing the sales of other devices. The world's mobile phone user base has passed a billion people, and the Smartphone industry has been outpacing sales of dumbphones. This trend has continued to grow and evolve. Recently in September 2021, Apple made an addition to its iPhone series with the launch of the iPhone 13.
