This in turn helps to preserve vision. The stent is made from soft, collagen-derived gelatin material of porcine (pig) origin. It is approved the treatment of refractory glaucoma in patients who failed previous surgical treatment or in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who are refractory to the maximum tolerated medical treatment. The stent is inserted ab interno through a small temporal clear corneal incision. It bypasses the trabecular meshwork and is placed in Schlemm's canal at the lower nasal quadrant.

Gel stent is used in aqueous shunt surgery for the treatment of conditions such as glaucoma, monocular vision loss due to astigmatism, monocular and binocular tumor surgery, and low visual acuity. Patients with glaucomatous tumors may also benefit from aqueous shunt surgery. For monocular vision loss due to astigmatism, gel stents are often used to reduce eye movement and thus prevent further loss of vision. These treatments are also used to treat patients who are suffering from monocular tumor surgery, strabismus glaucomatous disease, and low visual acuity.

In addition, aqueous solutions have been found to be very effective in the treatment of high intraocular pressure caused by scar tissue from surgical operations or eye surgery. Use of Gel Stents can lead to damage to the artery where the stent was inserted. Other side effects include, allergic reaction to the contrast agent used during the procedure. There could also be a risk of the stent becoming blocked or coming out of position.
